Myths vs. Reality
Don't let these common myths keep you from getting the legal help you need.
“I have a real estate broker so I don't need a lawyer.”
A real estate broker is paid to close deals, not to look out for your interests. They are not qualified to offer legal advice and may not be too concerned about the finer details of your contract. Legal advice from an experienced real estate attorney protects your interests and helps avoid significant issues down the road.
“If I file for bankruptcy, I will lose everything.”
False! You're likely to keep a lot of your possessions. The vast majority of Chapter 7 bankruptcy cases are no-asset cases, meaning the debtor gives up no possessions. You can save basic assets, called exemptions, necessary for day-to-day life. Hiring a bankruptcy attorney is critical when protecting your assets in bankruptcy.
“Only wealthy people need a living trust.”
Not true! The less you have, the more important it is to protect it. A living trust protects your assets and family during your disability and after your death. Most importantly, a living trust with a disability plan protects you from abuse during the years of long-term care.
